A group of scientists publishing in the ScienceAdvances magazine released a new model today projecting a higher rate of warming that was previously expected a few years ago. This level of warming is expected to cause significant environmental damage as well as economic damage to poorer economies.
Not to mention, this news comes on the heels of another story stating that warming of the Earth’s permafrost is causing the soil, that was once previously frozen, to start releasing trapped carbon dioxide into the air. This sort of effect can cause a feedback loop, further increasing the rate warming without even taking human activities into account.
However, the news is not all bad. Carbon emissions have stalled for the past three years suggesting the worst outcome, in which temperature increases by 8C by 2100, is not expected. A decreased reliance on coal and research into carbon neutral energies is seen as being partly responsible for this shift. Furthermore, technologies are also being created to remove Carbon from the air on an industrial scale.
Climate change has been claimed as responsible for record-breaking temperatures that have occurred in the last five years and even partly responsible for the conflict in drought-stricken Syria.
