If you use your smartphone for heavy duty tasks such as drafting documents or use it to play games, you might want to be able to use your phone with an external monitor. Using a larger screen makes the phone easier on the eyes, especially for periods of long use. And, if you hook up your phone to a keyboard and mouse, you could essentially transform your phone into a portable desktop.
Doing so can also breathe life into an old device that you don’t have much use for anymore. By using an adapter to connect your old phone to your TV, you can make it a cheap media center that can connect to Netflix, browse the internet or play games. Not to mention, it provides a great way to access the cloud and any photos you may have there.
Luckily, setting up your phone to work on an external monitor or monitor, whether it’s an Android or iOS device, is easy to do. It all boils down to selecting the right adapter for the devices you want to hook up. We’ve rounded up the best ways to do so below for both iOS and Android users. At the very bottom, we’ve also included USB-C adapters for those wanting to connect USB-C adapters to external screens.
How to Connect your iPhone to an External Screen
If you want to hook up your iPhone to an external monitor or TV, the process is very simple. You’ll only need to pick up one of the adapters below that will suit the port on your monitor. And, once you’ve got the adapter, simply plug in your phone and screen into each end of the adapter and your phone will automatically start streaming video over to your external screen.
Not sure what kind of adapter to get? The Apple HDMI AV Adapter is a simple adapter that will work out of the box for anyone wanting to hook up their iPhone to an external screen that has an HDMI port. For those still running with older monitors that use VGA or DVI, there are still adapters made to allow you to connect your iPhone to them. However, those who have a DVI only monitor will need to buy a VGA to DVI adapter to get it work. You can get one here for only $4.
How to Connect your Android Phone to an External Monitor or TV
Like connecting an iPhone to a TV, connecting your Android to an external screen is dead simple. All you need to buy is the appropriate adapter for your monitor and plug your phone in. However, if you wish to plug your Android phone into a DVI port, you’ll likely have to buy a VGA adapter to DVI. If you aren’t interested in using a wired option to connect your device to a screen, Android also offers wireless options such as the Roku or the Chromecast. However, doing so will not offer a full 1 to 1 connection between the screen of your phone and your TV. These wireless options only let you connect to your screen on a per app basis and some apps are not supported.
These adapters should cover all of your needs when trying to connect either your Android phone or your iPhone over to your external TV or Monitor. And the process is simple enough so, once you have then, you should have no trouble getting your phone hooked up.
